Captain Ibrahim Traoré’s reported rejection of introducing Sharia law in Burkina Faso has ignited an important conversation about religion, government and development across Africa.
Traoré’s position appears to be clear: Burkina Faso must remain a secular country where Muslims, Christians, traditional spiritual practitioners and people of other beliefs can live freely under one national legal system. He has also challenged young Africans to pursue technological, scientific and professional knowledge that can contribute directly to national development.
In this video, I explain why I believe Captain Ibrahim Traoré is right to resist the establishment of religious law as the governing system of Burkina Faso. Faith can provide spiritual guidance, discipline and community, but governing a diverse nation requires institutions that protect every citizen equally—regardless of religion, ethnicity or personal belief.
We also examine a larger and more controversial question: have countries governed partly or primarily through strict religious legal systems struggled to produce the education, innovation, industrialization and economic opportunities their populations need? Correlation is not automatically causation, and every African country has its own political and historical realities. However, the relationship between religious authority, individual freedom, modern education and national development deserves an honest discussion.
Africa needs engineers, scientists, manufacturers, doctors, entrepreneurs and functioning institutions. Our governments should protect the right to worship without allowing any one religious tradition to dominate citizens who do not follow it.
