Guests at the Greenfield Village Block Party had a unique opportunity to hear from Jawana Jackson, daughter of Dr. Sullivan and Mrs. Richie Jean Sherrod Jackson. Just 4 years old when her family’s home became a strategic base for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Jawana later became the Jackson Home’s caretaker, working to preserve it as a museum in Selma. In 2022, she asked The Henry Ford to relocate the home to Greenfield Village, where its legacy will be shared with generations to come.
Jawana was joined onstage by Jamon Jordan, Detroit’s official historian, to discuss her family’s involvement in the Voting Rights Movement, her childhood in Selma, and more.
