Season 5: OHNI Case Files - Episode 5: Ghana Medical Mission
In 2019, Dr. Ryan Osborne had a virtual consultation with a woman named Rose from Uganda. Rose had an extremely large parotid tumor that affected every part of her life. The tumor caused her to become ostracized and rejected by her own family, and doctors who diagnosed her believed it was cancerous. They considered her condition hopeless, and Rose was treated as though she was already dead.
Dr. Osborne’s plan was to bring Rose to the United States to operate on her. However, because of the COVID-19 pandemic, he was unable to perform her surgery at that time. Their paths later crossed when the Osborne Head and Neck Foundation traveled to Ghana to participate in a medical and humanitarian mission.
The teams were divided into two groups: the medical team and the impact team. The medical team provided free head and neck surgeries to the people of Ghana, while the impact team renovated and restored recreational facilities at Agape Children’s Home, an orphanage for children.
In one week, the medical team had to complete several difficult surgeries while the impact team worked to finish the renovations. Together, both teams changed lives and brought hope to people and communities in need.
