This week, our Montana overlanding adventure brings two journeys together. From riverside camping in Three Forks to a massive gathering at the X Overland Ranch, it’s a week of travel and family.
We begin beside the river with our friends Christoff and Vanessa from South Africa. What was meant to be a short stop quickly became a place we did not want to leave. We cooked over the fire, shared stories, introduced them to fly-fishing, and learned the proper South African way to braai.
From there, we headed to The Big Thing at the X Overland Ranch in Three Forks, Montana—an inspiring gathering filled with old friends, new friends, seasoned travellers, and people just beginning their own adventures.
Meanwhile, Pete and Dan were making their way across the country to join us. Pete covered nearly 2,000 miles in his Land Rover Defender, while Dan made the journey on his KTM 690. After long days on the road, they arrived Saturday night—just in time to reconnect with everyone and be part of the event.
Pete also joined the X Overland team on stage to talk about the Milestones adventure he had been part of, bringing another part of the journey full circle.
But the most meaningful reunion was still to come.
Pete and Dan had not yet met their new niece, baby Sarah, and our entire family had not been together in nearly a year. At the end of the week, we were finally reunited—all of us together again—and the boys met their niece for the very first time.
From quiet mornings beside the river and a 2,000-mile journey across the country to an unforgettable gathering and a long-awaited family reunion, this episode is about friendship, adventure, and the roads that bring us home to one another.
