​Thousands of traditional congregations are closing their doors this year, and leadership is asking the exact same question: why is the church dying in 2026? The truth is, people aren't necessarily walking away from Jesus—they are walking away from a religious system built on fear, guilt, and control. ​In this episode of Zarak Simmons: Reconstructed, we dive deep into the Christian deconstruction movement and why so many believers are leaving the church to find actual spiritual peace. For centuries, the institutional church has weaponized the concept of "sin" and the constant terror of hell to keep people in line. But when you look at the original teachings of Jesus—including the beautiful, unifying messages found in texts like the Gospel of Thomas—you won't find a god who wants you terrified. You find a message of profound love, forgiveness, and spiritual oneness. ​I am not an atheist; I still follow Christ. But I refuse to subscribe to a version of traditional faith where even good, kind people live in constant shame. If your faith requires you to fiercely defend it out of anger or anxiety, it might be time to question who actually built that theology. ​Whether you consider yourself an exvangelical, someone undergoing a spiritual awakening, or a lifelong believer who simply wants a new pathway, it's time to have a real conversation about deconstructing faith and moving beyond manufactured shame. ​Let me know where you stand in the comments.
