How/Why does the Aluminium foil consumes the tarnish?
Most of the tarnish on Silver is caused by sulfur/sulphur in the air and Aluminium in the foil has higher affinity for sulphur and its the Electrochemical reaction which attracts the tarnish on the silver.
Why Baking Soda in this method?
Basically, when the silver sulfide(tarnish) is immersed in the water solution with the baking soda it creates a reaction that transfers the tarnish from the silver pieces to the foil. In simple terms the aluminum foil basically consumes the tarnish.
