Recall numbers: Ford 26C10 | NHTSA 26V104

The central issue

This is not a failure of the truck or SUV’s normal hydraulic brakes. It is a software problem in Ford’s Integrated Trailer Module, which controls communication with a connected trailer.

During vehicle startup—particularly as the vehicle wakes from “sleep mode”—a software timing conflict can leave the trailer module powered up but unable to communicate with the vehicle. Ford calls this a software “race condition.”

When that happens with a trailer attached:

The trailer’s brake lights may not work. The trailer’s turn signals may not work. On vehicles equipped with Ford’s high-series trailer module, the trailer’s electric brakes may also stop functioning.

That creates two risks: the driver may have less ability to control the trailer, and motorists behind the trailer may not see braking or turning signals.
