Middle ages Medieval music in France in Chinon with Tormis "Royal dance"
Trouvères and troubadours were medieval poet-musicians who composed and performed lyric poetry, particularly songs, during the High Middle Ages. They belonged to two distinct cultural and linguistic regions: troubadours in the Occitan-speaking regions of Southern France, and trouvères in the northern, Old French-speaking regions, including parts of modern-day France and Belgium.

Troubadours were primarily active in the Occitan-speaking regions of Southern France, which included present-day Provence and surrounding areas.
Troubadours were often members of the nobility or the upper class. They moved within courtly circles, composing and performing songs that revolved around themes of courtly love, chivalry, and the ideals of the medieval court.
Courtly Love: Troubadour poetry often focused on the concept of courtly love, a highly stylized and idealized form of love associated with the medieval courtly tradition. Chivalry: Many troubadour songs celebrated the ideals of chivalry, including bravery, honor, and loyalty.
Troubadours typically accompanied themselves on instruments like the lute or a small harp while singing their compositions. Notable Troubadours: Arnaut Daniel, Bernart de Ventadorn, and Guilhem IX, Duke of Aquitaine, are among the notable troubadours.
Trouvères were active in the northern, Old French-speaking regions, including areas that are part of modern-day France and Belgium. Social Context:
Like troubadours, trouvères were often associated with the nobility, but they also included members of the urban bourgeoisie. They performed in courts, but their audiences were not limited to the nobility.
Trouvère poetry shared similarities with troubadour poetry, focusing on courtly love, chivalry, and various other themes. However, trouvères also explored topics like satire and moralizing themes in their songs. Musical Accompaniment:
Trouvères, like troubadours, accompanied themselves on instruments. Common instruments included the vielle (a type of medieval fiddle) and various plucked string instruments. Notable Trouvères: Adam de la Halle, Chrétien de Troyes, and Thibaut IV, Count of Champagne, are among the notable trouvères. Both troubadours and trouvères played vital roles in shaping the medieval lyric tradition. Their poetic and musical contributions laid the groundwork for subsequent developments in Western music and literature, influencing the troubadours and trouveres that followed, as well as the later developments in the Renaissance and beyond.
