A modern house on the water. Setting up a language and choosing materials for the new house were important first steps. Japanese sho Sugi ban was chosen for the siding, accoya for the trim, the sills are mahogany, the roof is alaskan cedar and the windows are metal. One of the details that was very important to the client was a clean minimal facade. In cases where we wanted to shield visibility, while capturing views and sunlight, I designed a custom louver system. The louvers were powder coated aluminum and manufactured by the window company. A custom aluminum channel datum wraps the entire house as well. The datum serves as a visual and functional break for the siding which only comes in specified lengths. Finally, the client asked eliminate unsightly gutters. Due to the damage fascades can accumulate from poor rainwater management we decided instead to conceal them rather than leave them out completely. We increased the depth of the exterior walls, and built a well flashed and waterproofed detail just above the second story windows. I’m Doug Patt we’ll see you next time.
