Bet Twice, the forgotten horse of the racing world, boldly reclaimed his stature by outfinishing Lost Code, Cryptoclearance and Alysheba to win the $600,000 Pimlico Special today at Pimlico Race Course.
Bet Twice and his rider, Craig Perret, then had to win the race a second time in the stewards' stand after Pat Day, Lost Code's rider, claimed that the winner had fouled him through the stretch. The stewards looked at the tapes for 10 minutes before deciding to leave the results alone. From Fifth to First
Bet Twice was dismissed at 6-to-1 as the fourth choice in a field of six, and he remained virtually forgotten as Lost Code held a half-length lead over Alysheba entering the stretch turn. Lost Code pulled clear for a moment, then Bet Twice suddenly shot through an opening at the rail and stuck a head in front while going from fifth to first in less than a furlong. He and Lost Code dueled heads apart in close quarters until the final 50 yards, when Bet Twice pulled clear to win by three-quarters of a length.
