Corning Museum of Glass

In this episode, Michael and Katie take a field trip to the Corning Museum of Glass collections warehouse, where they meet up with Marisa, Conservator of Postwar & Contemporary Glass, and Lindsay, Preparator and Art Packing Specialist, to get the inside scoop on what it takes to prepare a glass artwork for installation in the Museum.

Marisa and Lindsay are currently preparing 233 objects for this year's major exhibition, Tough Stuff: Women in the American Glass Studio.

The featured work in this episode is "Mobile," created by Frances Stewart Higgins and Michael Higgins in 1988. Inspired by the colors of nature and the possibilities of fused glass, Frances Higgins built a career around experimentation with warm-glass techniques and enameling. Her inventive use of leftover glass can be seen in her early mobiles from the 1950s, which helped establish a distinctive visual language that continued throughout her career.
