His debut solo album, Brown Sugar (1995), received widespread acclaim and sold over two million copies. His next album, Voodoo (2000), debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. Its lead single, "Untitled (How Does It Feel)," entered the R&B charts and won a Grammy for Best Male R&B Vocal.

Analyzing what they were doing and then trying it myself. Karen Briggs was my biggest inspiration. She plays with all her heart and masters many genres." Coming from a Surinamese family with twelve other brothers and sisters, playing the violin wasn't an obvious choice. "A Black girl doesn't play the violin" — I've been told that more than once. I was often put at the back of the line when I played in orchestras, and I feel like I had to prove myself even more. Sometimes I even considered quitting, but luckily, I always had the support of my parents, grandmother, and the internet audience that watches my videos."
